Old meets Young!

Are retired engineers from the maritime industry too old fashioned? Is the new generation of young engineer too naïve? Is AI the future or is experience irreplaceable?

All was discussed in a Young meets Old PIANC event hosted by Boskalis in their Auditorium, hosted by Prof. Mark van Koningsveld. Theun Elzinga & Niels van Kouwen had an interactive presentation on Port Planning in the old style versus the modern way of working. Hans Janssen & Wilbert discussed the differences and resemblances between the scale models of the Oosterscheldekering 1980’s and 2025. Lastly Gerard van Raalte & Tim van der Biezen had an interesting debate about what a modern engineer needs to succeed from a skill set point of view.

Main take-aways: engineer should always come back to using common sense, understanding their calculations whilst at the same time expand their field of knowledge on more than only maritime engineering!

The event was a great success: good to see generations of engineers interacting! Hope to see you all in the next editions.
