WHAT ARE WORKING GROUPS?

PIANC brings together experts from around the world who work on ports, waterways, and waterborne infrastructure. An important part of this collaboration takes place within international working groups. In these groups, we work together with international experts on knowledge development for the sector and develop guidelines and recommendations that are used worldwide by waterway authorities, ports, engineering consultancies, and policymakers. For each working group, we may nominate two members, at least one of whom must be a Young PIANC member (under 40 years old). Platinum partners of PIANC may additionally nominate one extra participant.

Procedure for participation in working groups:

The PIANC-NL Secretariat receives calls for the establishment of new working groups (WGs) from PIANC Headquarters (PIANC-HQ) in Brussels. The PIANC-NL Secretariat (the Secretariat) then communicates these calls to our Dutch members, combined with a request to share the call with colleagues or others in their network who have relevant expertise.

Interested candidates are asked to nominate themselves/apply as a Dutch WG member through PIANC Netherlands. This is done by submitting an English-language motivation letter and CV to the Secretariat. Subsequently, one regular member and one YP (young professional, <40 years old) are selected from the national applications to participate in the WG. If there are multiple suitable candidates per position, the selection is made after consultation with the PIANC-NL Board. The Secretariat communicates the names of the finally selected Dutch members to PIANC-HQ. These WG members therefore act as the representatives of PIANC-NL within the working group. In addition to the regular nominations from the various countries, Platinum PIANC members (organizations) may also nominate working group members. These are additional members, alongside those selected through the process described above.

You are selected in a personal capacity to represent PIANC Netherlands in the WG. If you were to change employers at any point during the course of the WG, your participation could therefore continue, provided this can be agreed with your new employer.

Some time later, the WG is launched. After receiving the applications from all countries, PIANC-HQ selects the chair from among the WG members. The chair subsequently leads the WG and is asked to schedule a kick-off meeting to start the group’s activities. Typically, the kick-off meeting takes place in Brussels. The locations of subsequent meetings are determined within the working group and will depend on the locations of the WG members. Hosting a PIANC working group meeting is a great opportunity to showcase your own organization. The final product of a WG is a guideline/report produced under the umbrella of PIANC. The document lists the names and organizations of the contributing WG members as the author team.

During the execution of the working group, members of the PIANC-NL Board are available as a first point of contact for WG members. They can assist with practical questions and act as contact persons for informing the PIANC-NL Board about the progress of the working groups. In the event of a potential obstacle within a working group, they can also help think through possible solutions.

Dutch working group members are asked to present the outcomes of their working group to the Dutch PIANC network during an event.

In most cases, topics for new working groups are proposed centrally by PIANC-HQ. However, PIANC-NL may also propose topics to PIANC-HQ to be further developed within a working group. The Secretariat welcomes suggestions for topics from our professional field for which there is currently insufficient knowledge or information and for which a PIANC working group could develop a guideline/report. These may be topics originating directly from the Dutch context—provided they have international relevance—but also topics that are useful for foreign situations and projects. After evaluation, the PIANC-NL Board will forward suggestions for potential working group topics to PIANC-HQ.
