PIANC Netherlands has more than 600 members from the world of ports, waterways, navigation and waterborne infrastructure. Boskalis is not only a member, but also a partner. Daan Rijks and Paul Olijslagers talk about Boskalis’ involvement in PIANC and the value of the network.

What does Boskalis work on?

As a dredging and maritime services company, Boskalis works on maritime infrastructure projects such as ports, waterways and quay walls, as well as coastal protection, dike reinforcement, land reclamation and nature-based development projects.

Why are you a partner of PIANC Netherlands?

PIANC Netherlands brings together representatives and stakeholders from across the sector, including research institutes, engineering consultancies, clients and contractors. Knowledge exchange is at the heart of the network. Moreover, international collaboration is an integral part of our day-to-day business.

How are you involved in PIANC?

We are actively involved in the EnviCom and MarCom commissions, as well as in working groups as mentors, chairs and subject-matter experts. We also initiate new working groups through the commissions. Through our active involvement, we contribute our practical experience, help develop innovative knowledge and assess future PIANC guidelines and reports for their practical applicability.

Which PIANC reports would you recommend?

EnviCom WG 214 on the beneficial reuse of sediments, WG 226 on underwater sound, WG 227 on environmental aspects of dredging, WG 230 on Green Financing, and MarCom WG 121 on approach channels and WG 185 on ports on greenfield sites. As a PIANC NL member, you can request all these reports free of charge.

Which topics will require more attention in the coming years?

Many important working groups are already underway, such as EnviCom WG 256 on blue carbon. In addition, we expect artificial intelligence, electrification and predictive maintenance of navigation assets to receive increasing attention.

What international knowledge could the Netherlands make better use of?

Best practices from other countries. These are frequently discussed in every international working group when preparing reports. Broadening each other’s perspectives through in-depth discussions with other parties about their work and experiences is extremely valuable.

Which Dutch issue deserves a place on the international PIANC agenda?

Nature-based development around navigation infrastructure, such as intertidal areas, soft defences and sediment reuse.

What would you like to tell other professionals about participating in PIANC Netherlands?

Above all, it is enjoyable: it is an important place to meet people from across the wider sector, share knowledge and work together to find innovative solutions.
